French hit back after British attack on G-spot touches nerve

After scientists in London declared the G-spot may be a myth gynaecologists gather in Paris to launch counter-attack, as Lizzy Davies writes from Paris.

“Denouncing the study carried out last year by British researchers as fundamentally flawed, the French scientists insisted the fabled erogenous zone did exist in many women – around 60% according to Sylvain Mimoun, the organiser of the conference.”

Foldès, who pioneered a globally renowned technique to restore the clitorises to women who have been circumcised, said the questions in the King’s College study started from the false premise that all G-spots are alike. In fact, he says, the highly sensitive area bears little resemblance to the famed magic button guaranteed to generate immediate pleasure.

Moreover, said Mimoun, it will only be felt by a woman who knows it is there and takes steps to cultivate it. “In discovering the sensitive parts of her own body, this sensitive zone [the G-spot] will become more and more functional,” he said “But if she has never touched it and no one else has ever touched it ... it won’t exist for her as a consequence.” [Via]

Why men use prostitutes

The reasons why many men pay for sex are revealed in the interviews that make up a major new piece of research: The Guardian

An upcoming new law will make it illegal for men to pay for sex with a trafficked or pimped woman – and a punter’s ignorance of a woman’s circumstances will be no defence. Critics have suggested that this is unfair, that a man can’t possibly know whether a woman is being exploited. Our interviews challenged this notion. The men knew, to some extent, about abuse and coercion in prostitution – they weren’t operating under the convenient illusion that women enter the trade because they love sex. More than half admitted that they either knew or believed that a majority of women in prostitution were lured, tricked or trafficked.

Although some of the men said they thought the women they bought enjoyed the sex, many others admitted that they thought the women would be feeling “disgusted”, “miserable”, “dirty” and “scared”. Ahmed said he thought the woman might feel “relief that I’m not going to kill her”.

Only 6% of the men we spoke to had been arrested for soliciting prostitutes. “Deterrents would only work if enforced,” said one. “Any negative would make you reconsider. The law’s not enforced now, but if any negative thing happened as a consequence it would deter me.” Perhaps the new law will make Albert think twice about paying for sex. He told me, “If I’d get in trouble for doing it, I wouldn’t do it. In this country, the police are fine with men visiting prostitutes.”

What I Learned From The ‘Sex Toys 101’ Workshop for Men

Lesson 1: Lubrication
Everything is better wetter. If you buy nothing else, get lube. It’s the marijuana (or gateway) into sex toys. There are thousands of options, so Arbor helped break it down to the most important factors…

Lesson 2: Rings
If you’re having trouble lasting longer than most YouTube videos, a cock ring may just be the thing to help you out. Tucking it behind the balls will prolong an erection and delay ejaculation. Plus, after getting yourself under control, you can move it to in front of the balls for added sensation…

Lesson 3: Vibrators
The grenade launchers women use as dildos on YouPorn are not what your girlfriend wants. She will be scared, and then very suspicious of your intentions…

More, at Asylum.com

The takeaway? Straight guys shouldn’t be afraid to be creative in the bedroom. Open up desires to your lady and she may surprise you with what she’s willing to try, given the right circumstances and toys.

Plus tips on how to make that all-important video once you’ve got your toes in place…

Trilogy’s naked truths

It was the runaway hit of last year’s Edinburgh fringe. Now Trilogy – an intoxicating celebration of women, feminism and the power of nudity – is heading south. Maddy Costa talks to the show’s uncompromising creator… The Guardian

Trilogy is at BAC, London SW11 (020-7223 2223), until Saturday. Then touring.

Ask any woman if she is happy with her body, and chances are the answer will be no. But while most women combat that dissatisfaction by dieting or going to the gym, 27-year-old Nic Green went to a startling extreme. She created a three-part, two-hour show that requires her and her fellow performers, three other women and a man, to be naked for much of its duration. And then she invited a bunch more women to strip off alongside them.

Her show, Trilogy, which opens in London this week, was the hit of last year’s Edinburgh fringe – which might seem unsurprising, considering its high quotient of bare breasts and buttocks. But there is nothing sexual about its naked dance sequences: this is a highly politicised, unashamedly feminist piece of theatre that sets out to celebrate not just women’s bodies – of every shape and size – but their minds, achievements and aspirations, too.

Audiences have found it so inspiring that they have stood and undressed for the closing rendition of Blake’s hymn Jerusalem.

Big bottoms are preferable

Big bottoms are preferable | The Shy Girl

© Clayton Cubitt

A team of researchers at Oxford University have declared that carrying extra fat around the hips, buttocks and thighs is healthy, protecting against heart and metabolic problems. As we know, fat around the stomach, producing the dreaded “apple shape” torso is bad. “It is shape that matters and where the fat gathers,” said lead researcher Dr. Konstantinos Manolopoulos, to the BBC. Hey, nice rhymes, bro. [The Awl via ClaytonCubitt]

Now there’s beneficial health claims too…

Money quote: “As long as you are female and your hormones are female hormones you are protected from cardiovascular disease,” Manolopoulos said. “The moment you go into menopause and your hormones change, you lose your typical female appearance and you gain stomach fat and at the same time your risk for heart disease and diabetes becomes comparable to men of the same age.”

Is Elinor Carucci right to turn the camera on her children?

Elinor Carucci | The Shy Girl

JAMES HYMAN GALLERY is pleased to announce a major London exhibition of recent photographs by Elinor Carucci from 7 January to 20 Febuary 2010.

Carucci’s photographs ask many questions about the nature of family life and its often-overlooked intimacies, but they ask far more about photography. Carucci’s parents have the power of veto over the photographs she takes of them. Her children, however, do not. In an interview on Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour last week, Carucci acknowledged that her children may grow up to resent her portrayals of them. “They might be angry with me and I’m ready for that,” she said. Does that make it all right? [Via The Guardian]

Carucci was chosen by Photo District News as one of its “Thirty under 30 Young Photographers to Watch” in 2000,  won the International Center of Photography’s Infinity Award for best young photographer in 2001 and was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2002.

Curvy models: is this the shape of things to come?

Plus sized beauty | The Shy Girl “I think all women want to see images of healthy girls, not women who are emaciated. But, realistically I don’t think many women aspire to be a size 18, either. I don’t think using outsize models is really the way to change perceptions - it’s just an extreme volt-face.

“I am sure [British knitwear designer] Mark Fast only had good intentions when he put larger girls in his skimpy, spidery knits [last year]. But, really, all I thought when I saw the girls in the clothes is that it looked ridiculous.” [Via]

Apposite

Sarah Hartley of IllicitEncounters.co.uk said: “The adverse weather has obviously influenced many sign-ups. Usually, the West Country is a relatively quiet area for us – but over the last 3 days we have received over 900 new members from Cornwall, Devon and Dorset.

“Perhaps these wives and husbands have just been waiting for a time when they could join, away from the eyes of their work colleagues and, most importantly, their partners.”

The website, which was launched in 2003, has 350,000 members in the UK, the majority of whom are professionals aged between 36 and 40. [Via]

Thousands of married men and women around Britain are turning to adultery to relieve the boredom of being snowed in, according to an extramarital dating website.

G-spot ‘may not exist’, say scientists

The G-Spot may not exist | The Shy GirlThe G-spot, the erogenous zone that is said to be possessed by some women but not by others, may not exist at all, according to researchers at King’s College London who claim there is no evidence for the existence of the G-spot – supposedly a cluster of internal nerve endings – beyond a woman’s imagination.

But then again, what do they know? [Via]

Good luck!

Andrea Burri, who led the research, said she was anxious to remove feelings of “inadequacy or underachievement” that might affect women who feared they lacked a G-spot. “It is rather irresponsible to claim the existence of an entity that has never really been proven and pressurise women — and men, too,” she said.

…It’s incredible, isn’t it? Scientists can send probes to Mars and build steel towers half a mile high, but are reduced to bumbling ineptitude when it comes to mapping the intimate anatomy of womankind. Ever since Ernst Gräfenberg claimed to have identified a new erogenous zone in the 1950s, known thereafter as the G spot, biologists and sexologists have been quibbling about whether it exists. Now the author of a King’s College, London report studying female twins concludes that “the idea of the G spot is subjective”, rather than biological fact. [Via]

Another clitical update.

From graphic novels to graphic sex

From graphic novels to graphic sex | The Shy Girl

He may be better known for books such as Watchmen and From Hell, but Moore‘s essay on pornography in art is a fount of knowledge. Called “25,000 Years of Erotic Freedom” it is richly illustrated with works of art, from the Venus of Willendorf to a photo shoot by Vanessa Beecroft, and bound in a richly ornate art nouveau cover. [Via]

Like a tremendously witty history lecture – a sort of Horrible Histories for grownups, with lovely images such as the Vikings carrying out raids “ripped on fly agaric” – Moore’s defence of porn brings in a wide range of art, starting in the Paleolithic, and is illustrated with such masterpieces as Michelangelo’s lost Leda and the Swan. But it’s when he talks about late 19th-century art that his knowledge and understanding are most impressive.

It always amazes me…

It always amazes me how much people are willing to experiment sexually outside their relationships, yet how tame and puritanical they are at home with their partners. Many of my patients have, by their own account, domestic sex lives devoid of excitement and eroticism, yet are consumed and aroused by a richly imaginative sexual life beyond domesticity—affairs, pornography, prostitutes, cybersex, or feverish daydreams. Having denied themselves freedom and freedom of imagination in their relationships, they go outside, to reimagine themselves with dangerous strangers.

Yet the commodification of sex—the enormous sex industry—actually hinders our potentially infinite capacity for fantasy, restraining and contaminating our sexual imagination. The explicitness of sexual products undermines the power of mystery, the voyeuristic pleasures of the hidden. Where nothing is forbidden, nothing is erotic. Furthermore, pornography and cybersex are ultimately isolating, disconnected from relations with a real, live, other person.

http://www.alternet.org/story/16838/

A fundamental conundrum in marriage, it seems to me, is that we seek a steady, reliable anchor in our partner, and a transcendent experience that allows us to soar beyond the boundaries and limitations of our ordinary lives. The challenge, then, for couples and therapists, is to reconcile the need for what’s safe and predictable with the wish to pursue what’s exciting, mysterious, and awe-inspiring.
